The average salary in Qatar was QAR 12,860 a month in 2025, according to the National Planning Council’s Labor Force Sample Survey, the latest full-year official figure. The most recent quarterly reading, for Q4 2025, was QAR 12,303. Both numbers are national means across every nationality, sector and skill level, so they sit well above what a typical mid-career professional actually earns and well below what senior specialists in sectors like energy, finance or medicine can reach.

This guide breaks that figure down by occupation, industry, sector and experience, using official tables where they exist and market estimates where they do not. It also explains the difference between a basic salary and a full package, and works through whether specific salary levels, from QAR 5,000 to QAR 20,000 and above, are realistically enough to live on in Doha.

What Is the Average Salary in Qatar in 2026?

No official 2026 average has been published yet. The latest full-year figure is QAR 12,860 a month for 2025, from the National Planning Council’s Labor Force Sample Survey, and the latest quarter (Q4 2025) came in at QAR 12,303. The 2025 average was about 1.6% higher than the 2024 figure of QAR 12,656, so any precise “2026 average” you see online is an estimate, not an official statistic.

Source: National Planning Council, Labor Force Sample Survey annual tables (2019 to 2024 from the 2024 survey report, 2025 from the 2025 tables). Figures cover all workers in paid employment aged 15 and over. Pay has risen slowly but steadily, by about 14% between 2019 and 2025.

This is a mean, not a median. Qatar does not publish a national median wage. That distinction matters because a mean average is pulled upward by a relatively small number of very high earners, senior government officials, energy-sector specialists, and senior private-sector executives, while the survey also covers a very large workforce of lower-paid construction, domestic and service workers. In a workforce shaped like that, the mean sits above what a typical worker actually takes home, and a median, if Qatar published one, would almost certainly be meaningfully lower than QAR 12,860.

This is also why different websites quote different "average salary in Qatar" figures. The Qatar average salary most often quoted online, QAR 12,416, is the Q4 2024 quarterly figure, which newer releases have since replaced. Some sites cite even older Labor Force Survey releases, some blend in data from other years, and some use private salary-aggregator averages built from self-reported figures rather than the national survey at all. Where a site does not disclose its data year, methodology, or whether a figure is a mean or median, treat the number with caution.

How to read the salary figures in this guide

Anything attributed to Qatar's National Planning Council is official survey data, including the occupation-group, industry and sector averages. The job-by-job ranges are market estimates, triangulated from public recruitment and salary-aggregator sources because Qatar does not publish official wage data for individual job titles. Treat every range as a benchmark to compare an offer against, not a guaranteed number, since actual pay depends on your employer, qualifications, experience and negotiation.

Average Salary in Qatar Per Month (QAR)

The average salary in Qatar per month was QAR 12,860 in 2025, or about US$3,533 at the fixed exchange rate of 3.64 riyals to the dollar. Quarterly readings through 2025 stayed in a narrow band between QAR 12,218 and QAR 12,524:

A Qatar salary per month is the standard way pay is quoted: almost all salaries are quoted and paid monthly, including for annual and executive-level packages. A monthly figure in Qatar usually means one of three different things, and job offers do not always make clear which one you are looking at:

  • Basic salary: the fixed cash figure in your contract before any allowances, and the base your end-of-service gratuity is normally calculated on.
  • Allowances: additional monthly payments for housing, transport and sometimes other items, paid in cash if the employer does not provide the benefit directly.
  • Total monthly package: basic salary plus every cash allowance combined, which is the figure that actually determines what you can spend and save.

Two offers quoting the same basic salary can be worth very different amounts once housing and transport allowances, or company-provided accommodation, are factored in. Always ask for the total monthly package figure, not just the basic salary, when comparing offers.

Pay by Profession

Qatar’s official data groups workers into nine broad occupation categories. These 2025 averages from the National Planning Council show how wide the gap is between management and manual work:

Occupation groupAverage monthly wage, 2025 (QAR)
Legislators, senior officials and managers44,478
Professionals26,827
Clerks19,190
Technicians and associate professionals19,160
Service, shop and market sales workers7,363
Craft and related trades workers4,513
Plant and machine operators and assemblers4,016
Skilled agricultural and fishery workers3,486
Elementary occupations3,380

These group averages mix public and private employers and Qatari and non-Qatari workers, so a single private-sector job can sit well below its group average.

For individual job titles there is no official data, so the ranges below are market estimates, triangulated from public recruitment platforms and salary-aggregator data (including sources such as Glassdoor, PayScale and recruiter-published guidance) and rounded to avoid false precision. Figures are broad monthly bands, not guaranteed pay, and vary by employer, sector (public and semi-government roles often pay more than equivalent private-sector roles), qualifications and negotiation.

Pay by Industry

The National Planning Council publishes average wages by economic activity. In 2025, the best-paid sectors were mining and quarrying (which includes oil and gas extraction) and public administration, both close to QAR 33,000 a month, while construction and domestic work sat at the bottom:

IndustryAverage monthly wage, 2025 (QAR)

Financial and insurance activities29,772

Accommodation and food services6,609
Administrative and support services5,467
Construction5,405
Agriculture, forestry and fishing3,939

Those official averages include every worker in a sector. Construction, for example, employs a very large manual workforce, which pulls its average down to QAR 5,405 even though engineers and project managers in the same sector earn far more. The table below shows how pay for skilled and professional roles tends to compare across industries, based on the profession-level data above and consistent patterns across recruitment sources, not precise industry averages.

IndustryPay positioning for skilled rolesWhy
Oil and Gas / EnergyAmong the highest-paying sectorsCentral to Qatar's economy; specialist technical and engineering roles command a premium

Government vs Private Sector Pay

Who you work for matters as much as what you do. In the 2024 survey, government departments paid an average of QAR 31,774 a month and government companies QAR 28,018, against QAR 7,786 in the private sector, which employs about four in five workers in paid employment.

Employer typeAverage monthly wage, 2024 (QAR)
Mixed (joint public and private ownership)33,142
Government department31,774
Government company or corporation28,018
Diplomatic, international or regional body27,777
Non-profit25,656
Private sector7,786
Domestic (household employers)3,122

The private-sector average covers everyone from laborers to bank executives, so a skilled private-sector professional can still earn well above it.

How Pay Rises With Experience and Education

Across almost every profession in the table above, pay rises in a broadly similar pattern by experience band, though the exact increase between bands is not something Qatar publishes as a fixed percentage and should not be treated as guaranteed:

  • Entry level (0 to 2 years): the lower end of the profession's range, often close to or somewhat above the general market floor.
  • 1 to 3 years: a step up from entry level as a worker moves past initial training and probation.
  • Mid-career (4 to 8 years): typically the middle of the profession's range, where most working professionals sit.
  • Senior (9 years and beyond): the upper end of the general range, before management premiums apply.
  • Management: a further premium on top of senior technical pay for people-management responsibility, which varies by team size and company.
  • Executive / niche specialist: the top of the market, reserved for roles combining scarce skills, significant responsibility, or both.

Do not assume a fixed jump, such as a set percentage increase every year or every band. Real progression depends on your employer's pay structure, your own performance, and how scarce your specific skill set is in the Qatar market at the time.

Education makes a large difference. In the 2024 survey, workers with a university degree or higher averaged QAR 25,294 a month, compared with QAR 13,874 for secondary school leavers, QAR 9,958 for a pre-university diploma and QAR 4,250 for primary education.

Is Pay Different in Doha?

Qatar's official wage statistics are reported at the national level, not broken down by city, and the vast majority of Qatar's population and employment is concentrated in and around Doha in any case. There is no reliable, separately published "average salary in Doha" figure that differs meaningfully from the national average, so treat any site that quotes a precise, different Doha-only average with caution unless it names a specific source.

Where Doha genuinely does differ is cost of living, particularly rent. A salary that comfortably covers a family's rent in a lower-cost area of the wider municipality can feel tight for the same household renting in a premium waterfront district like The Pearl or West Bay, even though the salary itself is unchanged.

Minimum Wage in Qatar 2026

Qatar's statutory minimum wage is set by Law No. 17 of 2020 and has applied since 20 March 2021. It is non-discriminatory, meaning it applies equally regardless of nationality, sector or job type, and it covers domestic workers as well as other private-sector employees. It is regulated by the Ministry of Labour.

ComponentAmount
Basic minimum wageQAR 1,000 per month
Food allowance, if the employer does not provide mealsQAR 300 per month
Housing allowance, if the employer does not provide accommodationQAR 500 per month
Minimum total, if neither housing nor food is providedQAR 1,800 per month
Minimum total, if housing is provided but not foodQAR 1,300 per month
Minimum total, if food is provided but not housingQAR 1,500 per month

The minimum wage is a legal floor, not a typical salary. As the profession table above shows, most skilled and semi-skilled roles in Qatar pay meaningfully above this floor; the minimum wage mainly sets the baseline for lower-skilled roles and protects workers whose contracts might otherwise be set below it.

Basic Salary in Qatar vs Total Package

There is no single basic salary in Qatar. It is the fixed cash amount your contract names before allowances, and the legal floor is QAR 1,000 a month. Basic salary matters because end-of-service gratuity is usually calculated on it, so two offers with the same total can lead to very different payouts when you leave.

This distinction is one of the most important things to understand before comparing job offers, because two contracts with the same headline number can be worth very different amounts.

Worked example. A contract might read:

  • Basic salary: QAR 8,000
  • Housing allowance: QAR 3,000
  • Transport allowance: QAR 1,000
  • Total monthly package: QAR 12,000

In this example, the basic salary is QAR 8,000, but the total compensation the employee actually receives each month is QAR 12,000. This matters for more than budgeting: end-of-service gratuity, and sometimes other contractual entitlements, are usually calculated on the basic salary figure, not the total package. A lower basic salary with a high housing allowance can mean a smaller gratuity payout at the end of employment than an equivalent total package structured with a higher basic salary.

There is no fixed, mandatory formula for how a Qatar employer must split basic salary from allowances; the split is set by the individual employment contract and varies significantly between employers and sectors. Always ask for the breakdown in writing, not just the total figure.

The basic salary figure matters beyond monthly budgeting too: it is also what Qatar law uses to calculate your end of service gratuity when you eventually leave your job.

Common Employee Benefits in Qatar

Some benefits below are legally required for all employees under Qatar's labor law; others are employer-specific and vary by company, sector and seniority.

BenefitStatusNotes
Paid annual leaveLegally required minimumQatar's labor law sets a statutory minimum; many employers offer more, especially at senior levels
End-of-service gratuityLegally requiredPayable to most private-sector employees on completion of service, calculated on basic salary under the contract terms
Housing / accommodationEmployer-specific (common)Provided directly or as a cash allowance; not a universal legal requirement for every role
Transport allowanceEmployer-specific (common)Cash allowance or company transport, particularly common for lower-wage and shift roles
Medical insuranceEmployer-specific (very common)Widely provided, especially by larger employers, though coverage levels vary
Annual flight ticketEmployer-specific (common)A yearly flight home (or its cash equivalent) is a standard feature of many expatriate packages
BonusesEmployer-specificPerformance or annual bonuses are discretionary unless specifically stated in the contract
School allowanceEmployer-specific (senior/family packages)More common in senior or specialist packages that assume relocation with school-age children

Never assume a benefit is included. Confirm every item in your written offer or contract rather than relying on what is typical for the industry.

Is Salary in Qatar Tax-Free?

Qatar levies no personal income tax on employment salaries, for Qatari nationals and expatriates alike, and expatriate employees pay no social security contribution either, so for most expatriate workers, the gross salary in the contract is the net amount received.

There are two important qualifications to that general statement. First, Qatari national employees are subject to a mandatory contribution to the General Retirement and Social Insurance Authority (GRSIA), a pension and social insurance scheme rather than an income tax, which does reduce take-home pay for Qatari nationals specifically. Second, having no Qatar income tax does not automatically mean an expatriate owes no tax anywhere: many countries tax their citizens or residents on worldwide income regardless of where it is earned, depending on residency rules. Check your own country's tax rules, or take professional advice, rather than assuming the full Qatar salary figure is tax-free everywhere.

What Is a Good Salary in Qatar?

There is no official definition of a "good salary" in Qatar, and the honest answer depends heavily on your household size, whether accommodation is provided, and where in Doha you live. The table below is a practical budgeting reference, not an official benchmark.

Monthly salary (total package)General context
QAR 3,000At or near the statutory minimum wage level; workable mainly when the employer provides accommodation and food, tight otherwise
QAR 5,000Manageable for a single person if housing is provided or shared; limited room for private rent alone in central Doha
QAR 8,000Reasonable for a single person paying modest rent outside premium areas; tight for a couple without additional income
QAR 10,000Comfortable for a single person; workable for a couple with careful budgeting, especially with a shared or lower-rent apartment
QAR 15,000Comfortable for a couple; workable for a small family, particularly if housing is subsidized or in a lower-cost area
QAR 20,000Comfortable for most families in a mid-range apartment; allows meaningful savings for a single person or couple
QAR 30,000+Comfortable for a family including private-area rent and private schooling costs, with substantial room to save

Every figure above assumes the amount is a total package. If a headline number is a basic salary only, with rent paid entirely out of pocket and no housing allowance, treat it as meaningfully less comfortable than the table suggests.

Is QAR 5,000 Enough to Live in Qatar?

For a single person, QAR 5,000 is workable mainly if accommodation is provided or shared with roommates. Paying market rent for even a modest private one-bedroom apartment, which commonly runs from around QAR 3,000 upward outside prime areas, would leave very little of a QAR 5,000 salary for anything else. It is not a realistic salary for supporting a family in Doha without significant additional support such as free housing.

Is QAR 10,000 a Good Salary in Qatar?

QAR 10,000 a month is comfortable for a single person, covering rent, utilities, transport and groceries with room to save, particularly outside the most expensive districts. For a couple, it is workable with careful budgeting, especially if rent is shared or the apartment is outside premium areas. It sits a little below the official national average wage of QAR 12,860 (2025), so it broadly matches what a typical mid-career professional earns nationally.

What Does QAR 15,000 a Month Cover?

QAR 15,000 a month is comfortable for a couple and workable for a small family, especially if housing is subsidized, company-provided, or the household lives outside the most premium waterfront districts. It sits above the national average wage and typically allows for meaningful monthly savings once core costs are covered.

Is QAR 20,000 Enough for a Family?

QAR 20,000 a month is comfortable for most families, including in a solid mid-range apartment with room for a car, regular groceries and some discretionary spending. Single people or couples at this level can generally save a substantial portion of their income each month. It is well above the national average wage and puts most skilled-professional roles in Qatar within reach.

How Much Can You Save Each Month?

There is no single savings figure that applies to everyone; it depends entirely on your salary, whether housing is provided, and your own spending habits. The realistic way to think about it is to work through your major monthly costs against your total package. If you send part of your pay home each month, compare fees and rates when choosing a money transfer provider in Qatar, because the difference adds up over a year.

Expense categoryTypical monthly rangeNotes
Rent, 1-bedroom apartmentRoughly QAR 3,000 to QAR 9,500Wide range driven almost entirely by neighborhood; premium waterfront areas sit at the top
Rent, 2-bedroom apartmentRoughly QAR 5,500 to QAR 10,000Similarly location-driven
GroceriesVaries by household size and shopping habitsShopping at value-focused supermarkets rather than premium ones makes a meaningful difference
Utilities (electricity, water)Varies significantly by seasonAir conditioning use in summer months drives a large seasonal increase
TransportLow if using the metro; higher with a private carFuel is comparatively inexpensive, but car payments, insurance and parking add up
Phone and internetModest, fairly stableCompetition between the two main telecom operators keeps plans broadly comparable
Schooling (if applicable)Can be a very large expenseInternational school fees vary enormously by curriculum and school reputation

If your accommodation is provided by your employer, your single biggest expense is removed entirely, which is why two people on the same total package can end up saving very different amounts. Using the Doha Metro instead of running a car, and shopping at value-focused supermarkets rather than premium ones, are two of the more meaningful ways to reduce monthly costs without touching your salary at all.

What Expats Earn in Qatar

Qatar's workforce is overwhelmingly expatriate: non-Qataris made up about 95% of the economically active population in Q4 2025. Foreign workers arrive on an employer-sponsored Qatar work visa, and their packages are shaped by legitimate, verifiable factors rather than arbitrary distinctions:

  • Profession and industry: the sector and role you work in, as shown in the tables above, is the single biggest driver of pay.
  • Experience and qualifications: years of relevant experience and recognized professional qualifications (such as engineering licensure, CPA, or specialist medical certification) directly affect the offers you are likely to receive.
  • Employer: large multinational employers, government-linked entities and major energy or financial institutions typically offer more structured, higher packages than smaller private companies.
  • Scarcity of skills: roles where qualified candidates are harder to find in the local market, such as certain engineering specializations or cybersecurity, tend to command a premium.
  • Negotiation and package structure: how you negotiate, and whether you focus on total package rather than headline basic salary, materially affects what you end up with.

Be cautious of any source claiming a worker's nationality alone should determine their pay. Legitimate employers base offers on the factors above, not on where a candidate is from.

Highest-Paying Jobs in Qatar

Based on the profession and industry research in this guide, the roles that consistently sit at the top of Qatar's salary market are:

  • Specialist medicine: senior consultants and specialist physicians, particularly in private healthcare
  • Senior oil and gas and petroleum engineering roles, reflecting the sector's central role in Qatar's economy
  • Executive and senior management positions across large employers, particularly government-linked entities
  • Senior finance and banking roles, including investment banking and corporate finance
  • Senior project and construction management on major infrastructure and energy projects
  • Specialist technology roles, particularly cybersecurity and senior software engineering
  • Senior legal roles, especially in corporate, energy and construction law

The official data points the same way: managers and senior officials averaged QAR 44,478 a month in 2025, and mining and quarrying, the sector that includes oil and gas, averaged QAR 32,970. These roles are consistently reported as high-paying across the sources used in this guide, but avoid treating any single headline figure you see quoted for these roles as guaranteed; actual offers vary enormously by employer and individual negotiation.

How to Evaluate a Qatar Job Offer

Work through this checklist before accepting any offer:

  • Basic salary, and how it compares to the profession ranges in this guide
  • Total monthly package, including every allowance, not just the headline number
  • Accommodation: provided directly, a cash allowance, or your own responsibility entirely
  • Transport: company transport, an allowance, or none
  • Medical insurance: coverage level, and whether it extends to dependents
  • Annual flight ticket(s): for you, and for family members if applicable
  • Working hours and overtime policy, in writing
  • Annual leave entitlement, beyond the statutory minimum where relevant
  • End-of-service gratuity terms, and which salary figure it is calculated on
  • Probation period length and terms
  • Notice period required on both sides
  • Family benefits, if you plan to relocate with dependents
  • School allowance, if you have school-age children

If you are moving for a specific role such as an airline, energy or government-linked position, also check whether the employer publishes its own package details; our Qatar Airways careers and salary guide is one example of how much detail can genuinely be confirmed versus estimated for a specific employer.

How to Negotiate Salary in Qatar

  • Negotiate the total package, not just the basic salary. A higher basic salary with fewer allowances is not automatically better than a lower basic salary with strong housing and transport allowances; compare the total.
  • Benchmark against real ranges. Use profession-level ranges like those in this guide, rather than a single number you saw once, as your starting point.
  • Ask what the gratuity is calculated on. If a large share of your package is allowances rather than basic salary, your end-of-service payout may be smaller than the headline total suggests.
  • Get everything in writing. Verbal promises about bonuses, flights or future increases are not enforceable the way a written contract term is. After you arrive, you can check your employment contract online to confirm the registered terms match your offer.
  • Consider the full picture, not just salary. Job security, career development, visa sponsorship for family, and company reputation all have real value beyond the number on the offer letter.

If a dispute arises after you start work, such as unpaid wages or a contract not being honoured, our guide to filing a labor complaint in Qatar explains the official process.

Final Summary

The official average salary in Qatar was QAR 12,860 a month in 2025, from the National Planning Council’s Labor Force Sample Survey, with the latest quarter (Q4 2025) at QAR 12,303. It is a national mean, not a median, and it sits above what most mid-career professionals actually earn because it is pulled upward by a smaller number of very high earners.

What matters more for evaluating your own situation is the total monthly package for your specific profession and experience level, not the national average. Always compare offers on total package, including accommodation and transport, rather than basic salary alone, and confirm every benefit in writing before accepting a role.

Editorial review note. This guide was researched using Qatar's National Planning Council Labor Force Sample Survey (the 2025 annual tables, the quarterly releases from Q4 2024 to Q4 2025, and the 2024 survey report), Qatar's minimum wage law (Law No. 17 of 2020), and current publicly available information on Qatar's tax and social insurance rules. Job-by-job salary ranges and the skilled-role industry positioning are market estimates triangulated from public recruitment and salary-aggregator sources, clearly distinguished throughout from official government statistics, because Qatar does not publish official salary data for individual job titles. Where source data disagreed internally or could not be independently reconciled, this guide omitted the figure rather than presenting it as fact.

Correction and update policy. Salary data changes as new official surveys and market data are published. We review this page regularly and update it when new official figures become available. If something here is out of date, contact us and we will verify and correct it, noting the revision date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average salary in Qatar?

QAR 12,860 a month in 2025, the latest full-year figure from Qatar's National Planning Council Labor Force Sample Survey. The most recent quarter, Q4 2025, was QAR 12,303, and Q4 2024 was QAR 12,416. These are national means across all sectors and nationalities, not medians, and no official 2026 figure has been published yet.

What was the average salary in Qatar in 2025?

The official 2025 average was QAR 12,860 a month for the full year. Quarterly readings were QAR 12,524 (Q1), QAR 12,218 (Q2), QAR 12,258 (Q3) and QAR 12,303 (Q4). The full-year figure was about 1.6% higher than the 2024 average of QAR 12,656. Salaries in Qatar, including senior packages, are quoted and paid monthly.

What is a good salary in Qatar?

It depends on household size and whether accommodation is provided. As a rough guide, QAR 10,000 is comfortable for a single person, QAR 15,000 is comfortable for a couple, and QAR 20,000 or more is comfortable for most families, assuming these are total package figures rather than basic salary alone.

Is QAR 10,000 a good salary in Qatar?

Yes, for a single person it is comfortable, and it is workable for a couple with careful budgeting. It sits close to the official national average wage.

What is the minimum salary in Qatar?

The statutory minimum wage is QAR 1,000 basic salary, plus a QAR 500 housing allowance and QAR 300 food allowance if the employer does not provide these directly, for a minimum total of QAR 1,800 a month. It applies to all nationalities and sectors, including domestic workers.

What is the basic salary in Qatar?

There is no single basic salary in Qatar. Basic salary is the fixed cash amount in your contract before housing, transport and other allowances, and the legal minimum is QAR 1,000 a month. Employers decide the split between basic pay and allowances, so always ask for it in writing, because end-of-service gratuity is usually calculated on basic salary.

What is the average salary in Doha?

Qatar's official wage statistics are reported nationally, not city by city, and there is no separately published, reliable Doha-only average that differs meaningfully from the national figure, which was QAR 12,860 a month in 2025.

Are salaries tax-free in Qatar?

There is no personal income tax on employment salaries in Qatar for nationals or expatriates, and expatriates pay no social security contribution, so gross pay is generally net pay. Qatari nationals do have a mandatory GRSIA pension contribution deducted, and your home country may still tax your worldwide income depending on its own rules.

Which jobs pay the most in Qatar?

Specialist medicine, senior oil and gas and petroleum engineering roles, executive management, senior finance and banking, senior project and construction management, and specialist technology roles such as cybersecurity consistently rank among the highest-paying fields.

How much do expats earn in Qatar?

It varies enormously by profession, industry, experience and employer, from close to the QAR 1,800 minimum wage total for entry-level service roles to QAR 40,000 or more a month for senior specialists and executives. Nationality is not a legitimate basis for pay; profession, qualifications and negotiation are what actually drive the range.

What salary do I need to live comfortably in Doha?

As a rough benchmark, QAR 10,000 to 12,000 total package is comfortable for a single person, and QAR 15,000 to 20,000 is comfortable for a couple or small family, though this depends heavily on whether accommodation is provided and which area you live in.

Does salary in Qatar include accommodation?

Sometimes, but not automatically. Many employers provide housing or a housing allowance as part of the package, particularly in healthcare, education, hospitality and larger private-sector companies, but this varies by employer and must be confirmed in your contract rather than assumed.

How much can a single person save in Qatar?

It depends on salary and whether housing is provided. A single person earning QAR 10,000 or more with provided or shared accommodation can typically save a meaningful portion of their income each month; someone paying full market rent alone on the same salary will save considerably less.
