Lusail Boulevard Qatar: How to Get There, Things to Do and Events (2026)
A practical guide to Lusail Boulevard in Qatar: how to get there by metro, tram or car, when to go, what to see, the big annual celebrations, and the best places nearby.
Lusail Boulevard is a free, 1.3 km public avenue in Downtown Lusail, about 20 to 30 minutes north of central Doha, ending at Al Sa'ad Plaza with its four Lusail Plaza Towers and the Al Nehem whale shark sculpture. The easiest way there is the Doha Metro Red Line to Lusail QNB, then a 10 minute walk or a short Lusail Tram ride to Downtown Lusail. Go on a winter evening around sunset. It is also the main venue for Qatar's New Year fireworks, National Day, Ramadan and Eid celebrations.
Lusail Boulevard is the main street of Downtown Lusail, a 1.3 km avenue that runs from the Al Khor Coastal Road to Al Sa'ad Plaza, where four tall twisted towers and a giant whale shark sculpture frame the view. It is where Qatar now goes to celebrate: the New Year fireworks, National Day weekends, Ramadan nights and Eid shows all centre on this one street. On an ordinary evening it is simply a good place to walk, eat and people watch, and it costs nothing to visit.
This guide is written for residents planning an evening out and for visitors fitting Lusail into a short stay. It covers how to get there by metro, tram and car, when to go, what is actually on the boulevard, the big annual events, and the places nearby that are worth adding to the same trip.
Where Is Lusail Boulevard?
Lusail is a planned city on the coast directly north of Doha, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car from West Bay depending on traffic. The boulevard sits in the Downtown Lusail district. According to the Lusail City developer, it was modelled on the Champs Elysees in Paris and is lined with mixed use buildings holding shops, restaurants, offices and apartments, with around 2,000 underground parking spaces beneath it.
Qatari Diar, the developer, describes it as 18 buildings in total: 14 lower podium buildings along the street and four commercial towers of 50 to 70 floors clustered at Al Sa'ad Plaza, the seaward end. Those four towers, designed by Foster + Partners and officially called the Lusail Plaza Towers, are the landmark you see in most photos of the boulevard. The street was finished in time for the FIFA World Cup in November 2022 and has been the city's main public gathering space ever since.
Several other Lusail landmarks are close by. The crescent shaped Katara Towers, home to the Raffles and Fairmont hotels, stand on the Lusail Marina waterfront a short drive away. Place Vendome mall, Qetaifan Island North and Al Maha Island are all within a few minutes by car, and Lusail Stadium sits further inland on the tram network.
How to Get to Lusail Boulevard
Public transport is the easiest option, especially on event nights when roads close and car parks fill. The Doha Metro Red Line ends at Lusail QNB station, which is also an interchange with the Lusail Tram. From there it is roughly a 10 minute walk to the boulevard, or a short tram ride. Our Doha Metro map guide explains fares, the daily cap and how to buy a travel card.
Option
Route
Good to know
Doha Metro
Red Line north to Lusail QNB (the last station), then walk
Standard fare QAR 2 per trip, capped at QAR 6 a day. The walk is around 10 minutes.
Lusail Tram
Change at Lusail QNB (Turquoise Line) or Legtaifiya (Orange and Pink lines) and ride to the Downtown Lusail stop
Same travel card as the metro, no extra fare to transfer. Downtown Lusail is the closest stop to the boulevard.
Car
Follow signs for Downtown Lusail or Al Sa'ad Plaza off the Al Khor Coastal Road
Underground parking runs beneath the boulevard. On big event nights parking fills early and roads can close.
Taxi or ride hailing
Karwa taxi, Uber or Careem to Al Sa'ad Plaza
Simplest for groups. Expect slow pick ups after fireworks and other big events.
Tram hours announced by the Ministry of Transport when the Turquoise Line opened in January 2025 were 5am to 1:30am on most days, starting at 2pm on Fridays. The metro also starts late on Friday, so plan a Friday visit for the afternoon or evening. A tram stop at Al Sa'ad Plaza itself was listed as opening at a later date when the Pink Line launched, so check the Qatar Rail app for the current status before relying on it.
For New Year's Eve and other major nights, Qatar Rail usually extends metro hours. For the 2025 to 2026 New Year, metro services ran until 2am. Even so, expect long queues at Lusail QNB after midnight and give yourself time.
Opening Hours, Entry Cost and Best Time to Visit
Lusail Boulevard is a public street, so there is no gate, ticket or closing time. Walking it, sitting in the plaza and watching the lights is free. Your spending is limited to what you choose to eat, drink or buy, plus transport and parking. The cafes and restaurants set their own hours, and most stay open well into the evening.
Timing matters more than hours. From roughly November to March the evenings are mild and the boulevard is at its best, with outdoor seating busy and winter activations running. From May to September the heat and humidity make a daytime walk unpleasant and occasionally unsafe. In those months, come after sunset and keep the outdoor part short. October and April sit in between: warm, but fine after dark. Our Qatar weather guide breaks this down month by month.
Best overall: a winter weekday evening, from about an hour before sunset, when it is cool and not crowded.
For atmosphere: Thursday and Friday nights, when families and groups of friends fill the plaza.
For photos: blue hour, just after sunset, when the towers and Al Nehem light up but the sky still has colour.
To avoid: summer afternoons, and the hours just after a major event finishes if you are driving.

Things to Do on Lusail Boulevard
Walk the length of it
The simplest plan is the best one: start at the inland end and walk the 1.3 km towards Al Sa'ad Plaza, then loop back on the other side. The street is wide, the pavements are generous and there are benches and shaded spots along the way. At an easy pace with stops it takes about an hour.
See Al Nehem, the whale shark
Suspended about 20 metres above Al Sa'ad Plaza between the four towers is Al Nehem, a 30 metre whale shark sculpture by the Italian artist Marco Balich. It was unveiled on 18 November 2022, two days before the World Cup kicked off, as a tribute to the whale sharks found in Qatari waters. It is lit at night and is the photo almost everyone takes. Stand back towards the boulevard to fit both the towers and the whale shark in one frame.
Eat and drink
The ground floors along the boulevard are mostly cafes, dessert shops and casual restaurants, with a spread of Arabic, Turkish, Asian and Western menus at mid range prices. Outlets open and close regularly, so it is worth checking a recent map listing before you set your heart on a particular place. For a cheaper meal, the Lusail Marina Food Arena on the nearby waterfront has around 70 food trucks.
Catch the World Cup legacy
Lusail was the centre of the 2022 World Cup: the final was played at Lusail Stadium, and the boulevard was closed to cars and turned into a fan zone until early January 2023. It went pedestrian only again for the AFC Asian Cup from late December 2023 to February 2024, and in December 2025 it hosted the FIFA Arab Cup fan zone with screenings and daily performances. Large screens, flags and fan activations tend to return whenever Qatar hosts a big tournament, so check the events calendar during any major competition.
Events and Celebrations at Lusail Boulevard
Outside the big dates the boulevard is a quiet, pleasant street. During them it becomes the busiest place in the country. These are the recurring highlights.
Event
When
What to expect
New Year's Eve
31 December
Qatar's largest fireworks display. The 2025 to 2026 show drew more than 250,000 people, with laser shows from 6pm, live music and a midnight fireworks and pyrodrone show. A ticketed Al Majlis area offered a closer view; the rest is free.
Qatar National Day
18 December
Live shows, stalls and national activations around the boulevard. In 2025 celebrations ran on 18 and 19 December alongside the FIFA Arab Cup final.
Ramadan
Varies (expected around February in 2027)
Evening Ramadan programme. In 2026 it ran nightly from 8pm to 1am with food kiosks, a Ramadan souq, a daily iftar cannon, children's workshops and an afternoon classic car parade.
Eid holidays
Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha
Fireworks, stage shows and family activities at Al Sa'ad Plaza in recent years. Timings are announced shortly before each Eid.
Winter season
Roughly November to March
Light installations, decorations and live performances along the street. The Luminous light festival was held here in early 2024.
Exact dates, times and programmes change every year and are usually published only a week or two ahead on the Visit Qatar events calendar and Lusail City's social media. For crowded nights, arrive at least two hours early, travel by metro, agree a meeting point with your group in case phones stop working, and keep the emergency numbers for Qatar saved on your phone.
Nearby Places to Add to Your Visit
Lusail Boulevard is rarely a full day on its own, but it combines well with the places around it. Here is what is close and how it fits.
Lusail Marina Promenade and Katara Towers
The Lusail waterfront stretches for several kilometres with palm lined paths, cycling and jogging lanes, children's fountains and shaded playgrounds, according to Visit Qatar. It is the best place to see the Katara Towers, whose two curved halves resemble the crossed swords on Qatar's national emblem. The Lusail Marina Food Arena and the "I Love Lusail" sign are also along this stretch. Sunset here, followed by dinner on the boulevard, is an easy evening plan.

Place Vendome mall
This Paris styled mall has around 580 stores and a canal running through it. Visit Qatar lists its hours as 9am to 11pm Sunday to Wednesday and 9am to 1am Thursday to Saturday, with a dancing fountain and laser show every hour from 7pm to 11pm. It is the best indoor fallback if the weather is too hot. Visit Qatar's directions are to take the Red Line to Legtaifiya and change to the Lusail Tram, which stops outside the mall.
Qetaifan Island North and Meryal Waterpark
Qetaifan Island North, reached by bridge from the Lusail waterfront, is home to Meryal Waterpark, a large water park with dozens of slides that is open year round. Reported hours are 10am to 6pm, Tuesday to Sunday, with Mondays closed, and walk in adult tickets have been listed at around QAR 310, with cheaper online booking. Prices change, so confirm on Meryal's official channels before you go. It makes a strong summer day out, followed by an evening on the boulevard once it cools down.
Al Maha Island and Lusail Winter Wonderland
Al Maha Island sits just off the Lusail Marina promenade, linked by a causeway. In winter it hosts Lusail Winter Wonderland, a seasonal theme park with rides, live entertainment and food outlets. Note that Winter Wonderland is on Al Maha Island, not on the boulevard itself. Recent seasons have opened between late October and November and run through the cooler months, with timed entry tickets sold online. Opening dates and prices are announced each autumn, so check the official Lusail Winter Wonderland channels for the current season. The island also has upscale restaurants, and a Lusail Museum is planned there.
Lusail Stadium
The stadium that hosted the 2022 World Cup final is on the tram network at the Lusail Stadium stop. You can see the golden exterior at any time, but getting inside usually means attending a match or booking a guided tour. Tours have been sold seasonally through Qatar Airways Holidays, so check whether one is running during your visit.
If you are building a longer itinerary, our list of the best places to visit in Qatar shows how Lusail fits alongside Souq Waqif, the museums and the desert.
Tips for Families
The wide pavements suit pushchairs, and the boulevard is mostly flat. On event nights, a baby carrier is easier than a pushchair in the crowds.
Children enjoy Al Nehem, the lights and, on the waterfront, the play fountains and playgrounds. Bring a change of clothes if you plan to let them near the fountains.
For toilets, baby changing and air conditioning, the cafes on the boulevard and the nearby malls are your best options.
On crowded nights, write your phone number on a wristband or card for young children and agree a meeting point such as a specific tower entrance.
Pair the boulevard with Winter Wonderland in winter or Meryal Waterpark in summer to give children a full day.
Heat and Safety Tips
Qatar's heat is the main thing that catches people out, even in the evening. Between May and September, temperatures stay high well after sunset and the humidity near the coast is heavy. Carry water, wear a hat if you arrive before sunset, and step into an air conditioned cafe every 20 to 30 minutes if anyone in your group is elderly or very young. October and April evenings are usually comfortable, and winter evenings can feel cool enough for a light jacket by the sea.
Lusail is generally very safe, with security staff and police present at large events. The main risks on event nights are crowd crush near the plaza and heat exhaustion while waiting. Arrive early, stay near the edges of dense crowds and follow instructions from event staff.
Dress Code and Etiquette
Lusail Boulevard is a public space in Qatar, so the usual expectations apply: men and women should cover their shoulders and knees, and avoid see through or very tight clothing. Light trousers or a long skirt with a loose top or t shirt are ideal. Malls such as Place Vendome also expect modest dress. Public displays of affection beyond holding hands are frowned upon. Ask before photographing people, particularly women and families, and keep music and noise reasonable when sitting near residential buildings. If you are visiting from abroad, check entry rules first with our guide on how to apply for a Hayya card.
A Simple Evening Plan
Take the Red Line to Lusail QNB and arrive around an hour before sunset.
Walk or take a taxi to the Lusail Marina Promenade to watch the sunset with the Katara Towers.
Head to Lusail Boulevard as the lights come on and walk to Al Sa'ad Plaza to see Al Nehem lit up.
Have dinner at one of the boulevard's cafes or restaurants.
On a Thursday or Friday, finish with the fountain show at Place Vendome, or head back to Lusail QNB for the metro home.
Final Thoughts
Lusail Boulevard is free, easy to reach by metro and at its best on a winter evening, when the towers light up and the plaza fills with families. Go in the cooler months, arrive around sunset, and combine it with the waterfront promenade for the best of Lusail in a few hours.
If you want to see it at its biggest, plan ahead for New Year's Eve, National Day or Ramadan nights, and take the metro rather than drive. Check the official event listings a week or two ahead, as programmes and timings change every year.
Yes. Lusail Boulevard is a public street with no entry ticket, gate or closing time. Walking it, visiting Al Sa'ad Plaza and watching the lights is free. You only pay for food, shopping, transport or parking, and for optional ticketed areas at some major events.
Which metro station is closest to Lusail Boulevard?
Lusail QNB, the last station at the northern end of the Doha Metro Red Line, is the closest metro station. From there it is roughly a 10 minute walk, or you can change to the Lusail Tram and ride to the Downtown Lusail stop using the same travel card.
What is Lusail Boulevard famous for?
It is known for the four twisted Lusail Plaza Towers at Al Sa'ad Plaza, the 30 metre Al Nehem whale shark sculpture suspended between them, its role as a fan zone during the 2022 World Cup, and Qatar's biggest New Year's Eve fireworks display.
When is the best time to visit Lusail Boulevard?
Visit on a winter evening between November and March, arriving around sunset. Weekday evenings are calmer, while Thursday and Friday nights are livelier. In summer, come only after dark and keep outdoor time short because of the heat and humidity.
Can you drive on Lusail Boulevard and is there parking?
Cars normally use the boulevard, and there are around 2,000 underground parking spaces beneath it. The road is closed to traffic for major events and tournaments, and parking fills quickly on those nights, so the metro is the better choice for New Year, National Day and Eid.
Is Lusail Winter Wonderland on Lusail Boulevard?
No. Lusail Winter Wonderland is on Al Maha Island, just off the Lusail Marina promenade and a short drive from the boulevard. It is a seasonal, ticketed theme park that opens in the cooler months, so check its official channels for the current season's dates and prices.
