Nepal Rastra Bank Rate vs Market Rate
Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), Nepal's central bank, publishes a daily table of foreign exchange rates against the Nepalese Rupee, and the Qatari Riyal is on it. For each currency NRB gives two figures: a buy rate and a sell rate. The gap between them is a spread, so neither figure is a midpoint.
The converter uses a different dataset, a single mid-market rate, so QatarVia shows the two side by side rather than blending them. The NRB table is a useful official benchmark, but it does not guarantee the rate a Qatar exchange house or a Nepali bank will give you. NRB lists the riyal among its “open market exchange rates” and notes that the rates quoted by different banks may differ.
Mid-Market Rate vs Qatar Exchange-House Rate
No exchange house sells rupees at the mid-market rate. Each provider quotes its own customer rate, and what arrives in Nepal can also depend on:
- Exchange-rate margin, usually built into the rate rather than shown as a fee
- Transfer fee, flat or tiered, in QAR
- Amount, channel and payout method: app or branch, bank deposit or cash pickup
- Partner or receiving-bank deductions in Nepal
- Promotions limited to a first transfer or one channel
Not every provider applies all of these. A zero-fee offer with a weaker rate can still deliver fewer rupees than one with a small fee.
Why Does the QAR to NPR Rate Change?
Both currencies are anchored, but to different things. Qatar Central Bank pegs the Qatari Riyal to the US Dollar at QAR 3.64 per USD, so the riyal does not float against the dollar. Nepal Rastra Bank keeps the Nepalese Rupee pegged to the Indian Rupee as the nominal anchor of its monetary policy: INR 100 = NPR 160. NRB then publishes rates for other currencies, including the riyal, through Nepal's foreign exchange framework.
Put those two anchors together and the QAR to NPR rate largely follows how the Indian Rupee moves against the US Dollar; NRB has itself described the rupee's ups and downs against convertible currencies as reflecting the Indian Rupee's volatility. Influences include:
- The strength of the US Dollar in international markets
- Indian monetary policy and exchange-rate conditions, which pass through the INR peg
- Nepal Rastra Bank policy and Nepal's demand for foreign currency
- Nepal's import bill and remittance inflows
- Inflation and wider international market conditions
This explains movements; it is not a forecast.
Sending Money From Qatar to Nepal
To send money home you need a provider, a payout method and the right recipient details. QatarVia's guide to compare exchange houses in Qatar covers providers supervised by Qatar Central Bank, their payout methods and documents.
For Nepal, provider differences matter. When QatarVia checked on 1 October 2026, Gulf Exchange published three Nepal partners: Himalayan Bank, Nepal Investment Mega Bank and CityExpress, a domestic network that makes cash collection practical outside the main cities. Habib Qatar International Exchange listed Nepal on its rate board, while Al Zaman Exchange's published destination list did not name Nepal, so ask before you go. Banks offer routes too: QIB announced in June 2024 that its Direct Remit service sends instant account transfers to Nepal through Nabil Bank.
If you are working out how much of a monthly salary you can send home, QatarVia's guide to the average salary in Qatar gives a starting point.
Bank Deposit, Cash Pickup and Digital Payout Options
Payout options depend on the provider and its Nepal partner. Use exactly the beneficiary details your provider asks for.
Bank deposit
Providers commonly ask for the recipient's full name, bank name and account number, and some ask for branch or other banking details. Enter the name exactly as the receiving bank holds it; a mismatch can delay or return the transfer.
Cash pickup
Availability depends on the provider's Nepal partner. The recipient usually collects with valid identification and the transfer reference number, and the name you enter when sending should match their ID.
Digital wallets
Some providers may offer digital-wallet payout. QatarVia could not confirm a current route from Qatar to any specific Nepal wallet on a provider's official pages, so check the provider's current Nepal payout options before sending.
How to Compare the Real Transfer Cost
The number that matters is how many rupees arrive. Conceptually:
Final recipient amount = amount converted at the provider's rate minus applicable charges or deductions
- Use the same QAR amount and payout method with each provider.
- Request quotes close together in time.
- Check the transfer fee and any stated deductions.
- Compare the final NPR amount the recipient will receive.
Sense check: multiply your QAR amount by the reference rate above. The gap to the rupee amount on a quote is roughly what margin and fees cost you.
